The Giant Kites of Sampango in Guatemala. Teams of young boys and young men work for three months to make these masterpieces out of Chinese tissue paper…there is no painting, just a collage of coloured papers. Everything comes together for the Day of the Dead on November 1st. Everything gets burnt that evening…it is a Maya festival of respect to the ancestors. It is also a fantastic way of getting the young people out of the violent culture so prevalent in Guatemala. Kites for peace and respect…harmony and teambuilding.
